Male Chastity: Why it’s really not a big deal

When I see the comments about male chastity devices in other venues (Yahoo Answers, Boing Boing, etc.) invariably a few guys seem totally freaked at the idea that anyone – i.e., any other guy – would even stand for having just one orgasm denied, let alone being denied for weeks or months at a time.

But let’s put this in perspective: I’ve often written that having sex without orgasm is not much different than having sex with orgasm (i.e., mine).I still get aroused. I still get to sensually explore my wife’s body, and she still sensually explores mine. I often even get very close to coming, even if I’m still in the device. In fact, all I’m really missing is that few seconds of “fireworks” at the end.

It seems that I’m not the only one trying to put this into perspective. From The Times of India comes an interesting article:

Men get 3hrs of orgasm in their lifetime

Singapore Gleneagles Hospital gynaecologist Dr Fang Zhuang Wei said that due to busy lifestyles these days, couples were only sexually active before and immediately after their marriage, reports the Star Online.

For instance, he said if a man had an average orgasm of about 2.5 seconds over 40 years (from age 18 to 58), and had sex twice weekly with his wife, he would enjoy two hours, 53 minutes and 20 seconds of orgasm in his lifetime.

Think about that. Three hours in orgasm over a course of 40 years. You spend more than three hours in traffic just commuting to work in a single year. Hell, you spend more than that waiting for the popcorn in the microwave.

Now, I’m not sure about the math in this article, so let’s work this out another way.

Assuming that the orgasm itself lasts 2.5 seconds, that’s 24 orgasms per minute.

If you assume sex twice a week on the average, then you’re looking at just over 4 minutes of orgasm in a year.

I had more to write, but I found myself fantasizing about having 24 orgasms in a minute, and my joints suddenly started feeling all rubbery.

Where was I? Oh, right. I found it interesting that this study assumed that the only orgasms would come from sex, especially since my informal methods (asking around teh internetz) turned up that men tend to masturbate 4 to 7 times a week. Since this essentially triples one’s time (and assuming that you continue to fap until you’re about to keel over), that means that you’d have spent a total of five to six hours in orgasmic bliss over the course of your lifetime.

Six hours of fireworks. It barely seems like any time at all, doesn’t it?

So, instead of asking why any man would limit his orgasms, I think one could as well ask: How much difference do you think it actually makes, anyway?
